Acne: Emotional and Social Impact, Remedy and Prevention

There are various ointments, creams and treatments that are veered toward getting rid of acne. Some people might wonder what the fuss is about blemishes on one’s face. Others may think those who spend a fortune trying to get rid of acne are vain and narcissistic. What they don’t know is that acne has very real emotional and social impact on sufferers.

For those who experience extreme breakouts, acne can derail their social development. These people may be too shy to interact with others or expose themselves to social situations. In a world where clear skin is ideal, even minor breakouts of acne can impact confidence and self-worth.

Acne in Teenagers

Most people associate acne with teenagers and puberty. This is because a lot of individuals first experience acne breakouts while in their teens. Some people may have only one or two zits occasionally while others suffer from a constant splattering of acne on their face.

During this time, a teenager is only starting to build his or her self-worth and confidence. Being ridiculed for having acne can negatively impact their emotional state. With hormones in the mix, there is always the possibility of breakouts. This can cause severe anxiety and depression in young adults. They may shy away from social gatherings or retreat into themselves for fear of rejection.

Acne in Adults

In adults, acne is a source of anxiety as well. It can affect their professional life as well as their social one. Having acne can derail confidence, cause anxiety and prevent socialization.

Since acne is associated with puberty, not a lot of adults expect to have acne in their later years. As such, they feel embarrassed and isolated because of their condition. Having acne can also drain them of their self-confidence and thus affect other aspects of their lives. Going into an interview, for example, is much more nerve-wracking for someone with acne. They can be a victim of misperception and scrutiny because of it. Other times, they are seen as unclean or unhygienic. This misconception about acne can upset any romantic or platonic relationships from forming.

Some extreme cases even lead to depression, body dissatisfaction, and other personality issues.

The Vicious Cycle

As has been said, acne can cause anxiety and depression. These may lead to bad habits that can trigger the emergence of acne. It’s a vicious cycle that can affect one’s quality of life.

One can be very conscious of acne on the face. The person may be tempted to pop them in order to get rid of the blemish. This causes not only more zits to appear but also facial scarring. Other times, those dealing with depression may eat unhealthily to feel better about themselves. This, too, can cause more outbreaks. Stress and anxiety can also trigger an outbreak of blemishes on the skin.

Acne Remedies

One way of treating acne is by eating less dairy and meat. This would prevent acne outbreaks and lessen the number of zits that appear. Some herbs are great for minimizing redness and swelling. A cool chamomile tea bag placed on the affected area would do just that.

Taking some anxiety supplements can also help stop the vicious cycle. Being more calm and relaxed can prevent acne breakouts caused by stress. Acne creams should be taken sparingly as not to aggravate the skin. Staying clear of pollution and heat can also keep the skin clean and blemish-free.
