Acne and Stress - How Is Adult Acne Effected By Stress?


Most people probably think that acne is a problem that mainly attacks during the teen years and that as an adult generally a person doesn't have to worry about such matters. However, truth be told acne can and does plague a lot of different people even into their adult years. There are a lot of different things that can cause acne in adults but many think that stress has a major role in those adults who are having acne problems.

Although the medical and skincare professionals still have not gotten together to agree upon whether or not stress plays a big roll in adult acne, many do say that one of the main causes for adult acne is directly related to the amount of stress someone has in their life.

Some say that it doesn't cause it, but it does however make it worse and those who may be prone to acne will find that stress will cause a flare up. Either way, it still leads to the final conclusion that stress does in one way or another take part in the occurrence of acne.

The ones that believe that stress actually does cause acne say that it is because there are certain chemicals that are produced by the body when they are under stress. These chemicals that are produced when you are tense are from the adrenal glands and they will flood your body with cortisol, which is a hormone that will trigger the sweat glands in your face to actually create more oil. In turn, this oil will then mix with the dead skin on your face which will then clog the pores of your skin. This then traps all of the bacteria inside and the result is blackheads, whiteheads or pimples.

So if it turns out that the acne that you are experiencing can be traced back to the stress in your life, this means that it's going to take more than just treatment for your skin to get rid of the acne. On top of getting the right acne treatment you are going to have to recognize the stress in your life and figure out how to manage that stress. Some ways that you might be able to do that are:

  • Take a warm bath to calm yourself.
  • Drink some herbal tea.
  • Listen to soothing music.
  • Read a book you enjoy.
  • Meditate.
  • Pray.
  • Get plenty of sleep.
Whatever you can think of that helps to soothe and calm you is something that you should consider using to manage the stress in your life.

You will also need to take care of your skin properly. Make sure that you clean your face with a good acne skin cleaner and also make sure that you moisturize your skin on a daily basis. You will need to use products that have ingredients that help to heal your skin and the acne. Adding to your daily care you should also include a nice facial mask either once or twice a week. If you can afford it you might also want to include a professional facial every few months.

You can also take some measures to help prevent the acne as well. First and foremost, do the best to avoid stressful situations if at all possible. Eat a good healthy diet, try to avoid food that is greasy and have lots of refined sugar. Refined sugar will cause your body's insulin to rise and this puts your immune system on sudden alert and can trigger the same things that stress can trigger.
